Aikido seminar with Keisuke Mizuno Sensei, 5th dan
by Leslie Mills, SanDan, Dojocho
Shinrikan Dojo
Indianapolis, IN

Mizuno san has been a friend of ours for several years now and we have trained together several times. We were honored to bring him to our dojo to teach a clinic over the Memorial Day weekend (May 26, 27 and 28, 2000), teaching 4 two-hour classes. Sensei brought two of his top students with him, and they trained along with our students, creating a very intimate, open, sharing group on the mat.

Sensei focused on the basic movements, cleaning up our angles and our posture. Posture and kamai were emphasized throughout the weekend.

Mizuno sensei showed us the articulate power and effortlessness that come with correct posture and extended 'kamai arms' within many of the kihon waza. He told us to tighten the angle of the back foot, drop the guard hand to belt level, and be more aware of the posture of the spine. Mizuno sensei taught us with gentleness, kindness and some humor and we all had a wonderful time. Thank you Mizuno sensei, for teaching us with your wonderful spirit, and being such a fine example to our students!

Mizuno sensei is Godan, and a student of Takeshita sensei, Hachidan, who was a student of Inoue sensei, now the Yoshinkan hombu dojocho. His stay in the United States is limited, and we feel very lucky to have been able to coordinate his seminar at our dojo.
